Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as National Guard Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, military units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including homicides.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would protect ICE officers and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were set up in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until early December.

Federal authorities has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, especially near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit against the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also issued an directive on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has accused the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, he said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch regular army in regions that are failing to suppress an uprising or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to over ten urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the military presence is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for example, murders were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, per police data.

New survey data released on Wednesday found that most Americans oppose the sending of troops without an external threat.
