"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have publicly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to form a group."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
