The Substance Film
The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the feared consequences of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, an aging actress demoted to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome procedure known as the Substance. This creates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in a progressively toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

Presence
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities through this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children on edge. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, late evening, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though the lead actress manages to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
The Spy Mystery
