British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
